Ethical and Sustainable Home Staging: A Greener Approach to Selling Homes

As a home stager, I’ve seen first hand how a beautifully presented space can transform a property’s appeal. But I’ve also noticed the hidden environmental costs that come with traditional staging—waste from temporary furniture, high-carbon imports, and non-recyclable items. That’s why I am so passionate about making home staging more sustainable. By taking a more conscious approach, we can create inviting spaces while reducing our environmental impact. Below are ideas on how to incorporate sustainability into the staging process.

Use Pre-Loved and Reclaimed Furniture

One of my favourite parts of staging is finding unique, pre-loved pieces that add character to a home. I love sourcing vintage or upcycled furniture because it not only reduces waste but also tells a story. Platforms like Freecycle, Facebook Marketplace, and second-hand shops are wonderful go-to for finding gems that make a space feel special.

Choose Sustainable Materials

I do my best to look for furniture pieces and accessories made from sustainable materials like bamboo, reclaimed wood, or recycled metals and plastics. When picking textiles, I opt for organic cotton, linen, or hemp—materials that feel luxurious while being environmentally responsible.

Incorporate Eco-Friendly Paints and Finishes

When a stage requires a little more work and a mix of staging and design, I use low-VOC or natural alternatives like clay-based paints. Not only do they create a healthier indoor environment, but they also enhance the natural beauty of a space.

Support Local Artisans and Businesses

There is something special about including locally crafted pieces in a staged home. Not only does it support small businesses, but it also brings authenticity and charm to the space. When possible, I look for handmade ceramics, textiles, and artwork from local makers.

Avoid Single-Use Plastics and Disposable items

Instead of artificial plants and plastic-based decorations, use fresh plants (the low maintenance kind), dried flowers, and reusable décor like woven baskets and ceramic vases. It makes a home feel more inviting while staying eco-friendly.

Maximise Natural Light and Energy Efficiency

I always encourage my clients on how to enhance natural light in their homes. Simple tricks like using mirrors, light-coloured design, and energy-efficient LED lighting can transform a space while reducing electricity consumption.

Recycle and Repurpose

When it’s time to de-stage a property, reduce waste as much as possible. Instead of discarding items, donate or resell them. Many charities and social companies accept furniture and homeware donations, which makes a positive impact beyond just the property market.

Educate Clients on Sustainability

We all have a role to play in educating ourselves on the value of sustainability beyond staging. The market is fast evolving and new technology constantly developed. It is a challenging to be fully sustainable but if we all play our part, every change has an impact,

Why Ethical and Sustainable Home Staging Matters
